Bangladesh Ordnance Factories (BOF) is an integrated and important base for indigenous production of defense equipment and form the backbone of the country's defense production. It is one of the largest defense industrial complexes under the ministry of Defense, producing conventional arms and ammunition to international standards. It was inaugurated in 1970. Although it suffered considerable damage during the War of Liberation 1971, its capabilities have been restored and expanded over these years. It has the following main factories:
Small Arms Factory.
Small Arms Ammunition Factory.
Grenade Manufacturing Factory.
High Caliber Ammunition Factory.
Tools Manufacturing Plant.
BOF is situated about 50 km from Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, at Gazipur Cantonment, a model township with most of the civic amenities available.
Initially BOF was set up with technologies machines, equipment's and support facilities from China, Later those from Germany, Italy, Australia, Belgium and Austria were added. BOF can now boast a mix of conventional as well as state of the art processes/systems including computerized controlled machines.
Based on the Quality Management Systems practiced, BOF has been awarded ISO 9001-2000 in the year 2006 and ISO 9001-2008 in the year 2012.
Slowly yet steadily, BOF is positioning itself not only to attain self-reliance on manufacturing and supply of arms and ammunition to Bangladesh Armed Forces but also to join the international export market.
