Scholarships for international students to Study in Canada

Home to one of the world’s most respected higher education systems, and one of the most coveted destinations for international students, Canada unfortunately doesn’t come cheap. For those keen to study in Canada but in need of financial support, we’ve rounded up a nice selection of scholarships for international students, provided by the Canadian government, individual Canadian universities, and other organizations.

Canadian government scholarships
Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Canadian government scholarships and fellowships offered to international

students undertaking postgraduate study within the natural and social sciences or health research.
Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s Program – scholarships for Canadian students enrolled on a master’s degree or PhD at a (CGS-M allocated) university in Canada. 
IDRC Research Awards – Canadian government scholarships for students from developing countries to undertake a master’s or doctoral-level research degree at a recognized Canadian university.
NSERC Postgraduate scholarships – various Canadian government scholarships, grants and awards available to outstanding students undertaking study in the natural sciences or engineering at an accredited Canadian university. Funded by the NSERC.
Organization of American States (OAS) Academic Scholarship Program – Canadian government scholarships from the Organization of American States (OAS), open to graduate students from any OAS member state (including selected countries in Latin America and the Caribbean islands).
Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program – Canadian government scholarships available to doctoral students internationally, to study in Canada at a participating university.

Anne Vallee Ecological Fund –scholarships for international students undertaking animal research at doctoral level at an accredited Canadian university in Québec or British Columbia.
Canadian Rhodes Scholars Foundation Scholarshipsscholarships to study in Canada, open to graduates of the UK’s Oxford University. For graduate-level study at selected Canadian institutions.
Trudeau Scholarships and Fellowships – The Trudeau Foundation offers a number of scholarships, fellowships and mentorships to international students at doctoral level undertaking study in Canada at selected institutions.

University-specific scholarships to study in Canada
Carleton University Awards for International Students – scholarships to study in Canada at Carleton University, open to all graduate students, who are automatically considered for the awards upon application.
Concordia University International Undergraduate Awards – various scholarships for international students to study in Canada at Concordia University in Montréal, open to international students at undergraduate level.
Fairleigh Dickinson Scholarships for International Students – scholarships for international students of all levels undertaking study in Canada at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Vancouver.
HEC Montréal BBA Entrance ScholarshipsCanadian scholarships for international students entering into the Bachelor of Business Administration program at HEC Montréal.
International Student Scholarships at Humber College Canada – a range of Canadian scholarships for international students at undergraduate level to study in Canada at Humber College in Toronto.
Queen’s University International Scholarships – a number of scholarships for international students to study in Canada at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Some awards solely open to students from India, Pakistan and the US.
UBC International Leader of Tomorrow Award – merit-based Canadian scholarships to study at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, open to undergraduate students who demonstrate leadership skills and exceptional academic achievement.
UBC Rio Tinto Alcan Research Fellowships – graduate scholarships for master’s and PhD students (of any nationality) studying pure or applied science at the University of British Columbia.
University of Calgary International Scholarships – a selection of scholarships for international students to study in Canada at the University of Calgary. Awards range from $500 to $60,000.
University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships – scholarships to study in Canada at the University of Manitoba, open to graduate students from anywhere in the world.
University of Saskatchewan International Student Awards – merit-based ‘excellence’ scholarships to study in Canada, for undergraduate international students at the University of Saskatchewan.
University of Toronto Mineral Engineering Lassonde Scholarships – various Canadian scholarships on offer to international and domestic students studying at the University of Toronto within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.
University of Waterloo International Funding – a variety of Canadian scholarships on offer to international students undertaking study at graduate level (master’s and doctoral students) at the University of Waterloo.
Western University International Admission Scholarships – Various Canadian scholarships offered to international students undertaking study at the University of Western Ontario.
York University International Student Program – York University offers a number of international scholarships for undergraduate students to study in Toronto.

Scholarships undergraduate international students at Victoria University

Below are the many International scholarships available to qualifying international students:



Unfortunately there are not many funding sources for students pursuing undergraduate study. Outside of the scholarships listed below (which only cover a limited number of countries) it is recommended you try to secure private funding from companies or sponsors in your home country.

International Student Achievement Scholarship

 

For currently enrolled undergraduate international students at Victoria, we offer a scholarship valued at $5000. The scholarship is based on academic achievement, leadership and/or engagement with the community. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognise and reward excellence and engagement of currently enrolled international students who have a strong academic record and leadership potential. New Zealand Development Scholarship - Public Category (NZDS Public)

 

This scholarship opportunity is offered to people from selected developing countries by NZAID, the New Zealand government's international aid and development agency. Both undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships are available. The scholarship covers tuition fees, return airfare, basic living allowance, health care insurance and an arrival allowance.
A list of the eligible countries from which people may apply and the relevant nominating authority in your home country can be found at the NZAID website.
How to apply
Applicants should direct all communications to their relevant home country office and not to the university as the university does not administer the NZDS Public Category Scholarship.

Education New Zealand $15,000 Study Abroad Scholarship

 

Go Overseas and Education New Zealand officially announced their partnership in
offering one $15,000 NZD scholarship to study abroad in New Zealand for a semester.
Award:
  1. NZ $15,000 towards a study abroad programme at a New Zealand university
  2. Round-trip airfare of up to NZ $2,000 covered by STA Travel

How to apply
Applicants must meet below criteria:
  1. Open to US citizens and legal residents
  2. Must have applied to participate in an official Study Abroad programme New Zealand university for one or two semesters/trimesters
  3. Applicants must be 18 years old or over
  4. Open to undergraduate and graduate students for studies commencing anytime in 2015 (winter, summer or J-Term)

Education New Zealand IIE Generation Study Abroad Awards

 

Award:
  1. Awards of US$2,000 available for airfares
  2. Awards of US$500 available towards studies

  1. 1 December 2014 for study in Spring 2015
  2. 30 April 2015 for study in Fall 2015
Eligibility:
  1. US citizen or hold US Resident status
  2. Enrolled in Sophomore year or above at a tertiary institution in the USA
  3. Must have applied to participate in an official Study Abroad programme New Zealand university for one or two semesters/trimesters
  4. 18 years+ at the time of application
  5. Minimum GPA of 3.0 in tertiary studies to date

New Zealand Development Scholarship - Open Category (NZDS Open)

 

This scholarship opportunity is offered to people from selected developing countries by NZAID, the New Zealand government's international aid and development agency. The scholarship funds postgraduate study in areas identified as priority development sectors in the applicant's home country. It covers tuition fees, return airfare, basic living allowance, health care insurance and an arrival allowance.
A list of the eligible countries from which people may apply can be found in the NZAID website.
How to apply
Candidates from countries that need to apply via their nearest NZ embassy OR a management contractor should check the relevant country information sheet to ascertain close-off dates for applications.

Commonwealth Scholarships

These scholarships are open to citizens of Commonwealth countries wishing to undertake postgraduate study at a New Zealand university. The purpose of this scheme is to enrich the intellectual life of the Commonwealth by encouraging the participation of each country's most promising scholars in the educational opportunities available to them. Scholars from developing Commonwealth countries are funded by NZAID, and scholars from Canada or the United Kingdom are funded by their New Zealand host university. Scholars funded by NZAID must be studying topics of developmental relevance to their home country.
The scholarship covers tuition fees, return airfare, basic living allowance, health insurance and some other study related costs. On completion of their studies scholars will be expected to return home to make a significant contribution to the development of their country.

Victoria PhD Scholarships

Victoria University offers an extensive scholarship program for PhD candidates. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and/or research experience and publication record. How to apply
In order to apply for this scholarship, you must apply for a PhD programme at the same time. For more details visit the Faculty of Graduate Research website.

Victoria Master's Scholarship

This scholarship is available for research focused Master's degrees. Only those students enrolled solely for a 120 point thesis are eligible to apply. In some cases this will be Part 2 of a two year Master's degree.
The Scholarship pays $15,000.00 stipend plus NZ domestic fees (internationals students have to pay the balance of international fees themselves).

VUW Graduate Awards

New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships - NZIDRS (PhD only)

Funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand, the NZIDR Scholarships are open to international students from all countries (including Australia) wishing to undertake doctoral research at a New Zealand University.
Up to 10 scholarships will be awarded each year. Selection is based on academic merit. For eligibility, scholarship value, selection process, and other details including application forms please visit the New Zealand Educated website.
How to apply
For ANY questions relating to this scholarship contact New Zealand Educated (NOT Victoria University of Wellington as we do not administer this scholarship).
Please note that the application period closes on 15 July
annually.
NB: International PhD students only pay domestic fees.


LEARN Fellowships

The LEARN co-funded PhD Scholarship will provide a stipend for a PhD student from a developing country to benefit from having supervision from a researcher based at a institution in New Zealand. The Scholarship is for a maximum of three years duration and the student can be enrolled in a PhD programme in their home country or at a New Zealand Institution to receive the Scholarship.

Other VUW Scholarships

Any other scholarships available through the university can be found by going to the scholarships database page on the main VUW website. Click in the 'Related Websites' box on the right hand side of your screen on 'Scholarships Database'. In the personal characteristics section (third dropdown box) chose 'international students'.
It is important to note that these are smaller value scholarships and usually for already enrolled students.
